Chelsea lost yesterday’s second leg game for Champions league quarterfinals to FC Porto by 0-1. And while Chelsea still advanced over Porto on a 2-1 aggregate, that was not the only wonder of the night. Christian Pulisic was fouled 11 times in Chelsea vs Porto, and still went on to star in the match!
The Chelsea attacker repeatedly eluded the overtly physical defence that the Portuguese team put forth. He frustrated Porto players all over the field and managed to play even after being subject to 11 fouls.
In fact, Pulisic reached a record with all these fouls. Because Pulisic was fouled 11 times in Chelsea vs Porto, he matched Lionel Messi’s dribbling feat.
Lionel Messi was the last player to reach the 11-foul mark in Champions League.
While playing with Barcelona for the competition against Real Madrid a decade ago, he was fouled 11 times. Then, in 2011, Barcelona grabbed a semi-final victory.
So, Pulisic drew as many fouls as any player since 2011. He even won 11 free kicks as compensation for this repeated ordeal.
Indeed, UEFA Champions League crowned Pulisic as the Man of the Match last night. He’s also a contender for the Player of the Week crown, as the UCL’s official Twitter declared.
Chelsea won the first leg over Porto 2-0, and so promote themselves to the semi-finals on a 2-1 total score.
