It took half an hour for the hosts to secure an opener with Said Benrahma scoring for West Ham.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo restored the parity for Manchester United just moments later, scoring in his third game in a row.

It was the lack of moments, of chances, after the break that lead to both managers to utilize their substitutes.

And it was one of these substitutes, Jesse Lingard, who did succeed in changing the game.

Indeed, Lingard’s late goal stole all three points for United against a team he was championing on loan last season.

Along with predicting exactly that Manchester United would win 1-2 over West Ham, we’d also predicted Lingard. We anticipated he would be eager to rectify his crucial error in United’s failed Champions League opener, and he did.

The England international received a pass in the box and dipped past Kurt Zouma. He then unleashed a stunning shot into the top corner ending the Hammers’ domestic unbeaten streak. (They had enjoyed two wins and two draws in their opening four games.)

But the drama was far from over last night. In the dying moments of the match, after Luke Shaw’s handball in the box, David Moyes decided to bring Mark Noble in specifically to take a penalty, only to watch United’s David de Gea superbly save Noble’s spot kick.
