Tottenham Hotspur moved up to sixth place in the league with a 2-0 home win over Brentford on Thursday night. So, among other of last night’s Premier League football news, Spurs beat Brentford in North London, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In other words, a week after an embarrassing Europa Conference League group stage defeat at the hands of Slovenian minnows NS Mura and four days after a fruitless trip to Burnley for a game that was postponed due to snow, Spurs produced their best 90 minutes under Antonio Conte so far.

Moreover, this convincing 2-0 win was a far more measured victory than Tottenham’s previous one at home against Leeds United.

In that game Tottenham, were appalling in the first half before responding with a much-improved second 45 minutes, while against Brentford they controlled the game throughout.

New Tottenham coach Antonio Conte’s side are now within reach of the top four after 22 points from 13 matches.

In the meanwhile, Brentford are sitting in 12th position in the table standings after securing 16 points in 14 games.

In this fixture, Tottenham took the first lead just past the 10-minute mark.

A dangerous Son Heung-Min cross deflected off Bretford’s Sergi Canos into the net for an own goal. Incidentally, the Spurs’ super striker played the central role in the second goal, which cleanly sealed their victory, too.

Meanwhile, Brentford’s Alvaro Fernandez did well to block a Harry Kane strike early in the second half of the match.

The Tottenham captain had broken in behind the defence and ran onto a through ball. When Kane shot on target, he only had to beat the Brentford keeper, but the latter saved the visitors.

However, Tottenham did manage to double their lead in the 65th minute on a quick-hitting counter-attack. Sergio Reguilon picked out Son at the back post to fire home the easiest of finishes into an open net.

A high-tempo display against Thomas Frank’s team should have brought more goals and Harry Kane’s league scoring struggles continue. The striker has scored only one league goal this season so that his strike partner Son is deservedly upstaging him.

But, all in all, it was a satisfactory night for Tottenham.
