Official Football Transfers – Liverpool Have Agreed to Sign Luis Diaz

Among other news today of official football transfers, Liverpool have agreed to sign Luis Diaz, a Porto winger. The two parties have finalized on a deal ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline, GOAL can confirm on their football news.

Diaz has twice played against the Reds this season in the Champions League for Porto. And though Liverpool won both games comfortably, the rumours are that Diaz impressed the Reds’ scouts massively by his progress.

Plus, many view him as a player who has proven himself sufficiently in his domestic league and European competition equally. But Diaz is someone who, at 25, still has significant room for improvement and development.

After all, he has played predominantly on the left for Porto, but can play other forward positions if need be.

Liverpool initially sought to strike a summer deal for Diaz, but acted quicker on this interest after Spurs accelerated theirs.

Julian Ward, the soon-to-be sporting director, is leading negotiations, as the outgoing Michael Edwards assists him through this January move.

And so, Diaz – who is currently away with Colombia in Argentina – will soon sign a five-and-a-half-year contract at Anfield.

The Reds launched a surprise late bid for the Colombia international, who had until recently been expected to join Tottenham.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will pay an initial fee of €45 million (£37.5m/$50m), with an extra €15m (£12.5m/$17m) in performance-related add-ons.

His arrival will boost Klopp’s attacking options significantly heading into the final months of the season. After all, Liverpool, who are still fighting in four competitions, need all the help they can get, now.

Diaz will thus join Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota in competing for striking places. Meanwhile, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has also performed well in that position in recent weeks.
