Mere hours after announcing that Paulo Fonseca would resign after season end, Roma have announced the appointment of his replacement. Jose Mourinho will replace Fonseca at Roma as the new head coach.
Roma, declaring it on their official website with a club statement just an hour ago, hired the Portuguese coach.
Per the statement, José Mourinho has signed a contract until the summer of 2024.
And, what’s more, he will start before the start of the 2021/22 season, despite Roma saying just hours ago that Fonseca would stay to finish the season.
The Rome club announced today that Paulo Fonseca would depart at the end of the season. The reason for this, cite Roma, is poor performance this season.
Fonseca’s Roma are currently on the 7th step of the Serie A standings. On May 2, they lost 0:2 to Sampdoria.
Besides these domestic shortcomings, last week, the club failed miserably in the semi-finals of the Europa League against Manchester United.
They took a 2-6 thrashing, and thus they have no hope for the return match on Thursday, May 6.
Roma hired Mourinho as their new head coach mere hours after they confirmed sacking Fonseca.
Moreover, Mourinho will replace Fonseca at Roma perhaps earlier than Fonseca and Roma agreed to part ways.

Mourinho has already worked in Italy with Inter. With them, he won two Scudetto’s, the country’s Cup and Super Cup as well as the Champions League.
Mourinho’s last club was Tottenham, which he left last month after Spurs management sacked him. Ironically, their reason to fire him was a poor season as well.
Italian journalist tweeted about the new hire, first thing:
José Mourinho has signed his ‘top secret’ contract until June 2024 with AS Roma yesterday. He strongly wanted to return in Italy. 🇵🇹🛬
Sarri was never an option: the only contact with AS Roma was in January. Mourinho was chosen by the Portuguese sports director Tiago Pinto. 🟡🔴
