Lionel Messi, this summer, made a sudden move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain, where he has yet to perform fully. Despite this jarring disturbance in his legendary career, he is one of the 30 nominees for 2021’s Ballon d’Or. Ballon d’Or have revealed a 30-man shortlist for the upcoming 2021 award, as our sister site’s football news covered yesterday. And as such, Messi will vote for his PSG teammates to win Ballon d’Or, the other two stars in attack.
Messi has admitted that he intends to vote for Paris Saint-Germain teammates Kylian Mbappe and Neymar to win the award.
Messi is one of the favourites to win the award, which would be his eighth. But he faces stiff competition from the likes of Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich and Jorginho of Italy and Chelsea.
Lewandowski recently asked, the 30 nominated footballers especially, to leave politics at home when voting for the Ballon d’Or winner.
Messi Will Vote for His PSG Teammates to Win Ballon d’Or
But Messi won’t heed Lewandowski’s request, as the PSG star admitted to L’Equipe that he intends to back his teammates.
“Obviously, I have two players in my team for whom I will vote: Neymar and Kylian,” he revealed.
Messi did, however, laud the Pole for his efforts over the past two years. He even conceded that Lewandowski is among the favourites, this year as last, to deny him a seventh Ballon d’Or.
“There are players who individually have had a great season, like Robert Lewandowski,” Messi said, further, in praise of him. “[Karim] Benzema has also had a great year.
“It’s hard to say [who will win] because what you do as a team matters a lot in the Ballon d’Or. It used to be the best player of the year that won the award but now it’s the one who accumulates the most titles. Achieving things has a lot of weight in this award.”
