Manchester City began the 2021-22 English Premier League (EPL) season by setting new records. They reached new heights in English football when they bought Jack Grealish for a record £100 million (football transfers). And now, they could end the year in similar style. Among other football news today, Manchester City may soon hit the record for most EPL wins within one season.
Early in the year 2021, Pep Guardiola’s side won 12 league games between the start of January and March.
Consequently, Manchester City claimed a new marker for the most top-flight victories at the beginning of a calendar year.
They comfortably eclipsed the previous best here, of nine wins by Bolton Wanderers in 1904 and Manchester United in 2009.
That run of results helped the Citizens top the Premier League table and claim a third title in four years.
And a continuation of those high standards have ensured that Manchester City top the table again, midway through 2021-22 campaign.
As the halfway point of the season fast approaches, City lead Liverpool by one point and Chelsea by two points.
Manchester City May Soon Hit the Record for Most EPL Wins
Those two teams are also in Manchester City’s sights for another reason as Guardiola’s side close in on another record.
Manchester City have five Premier League games left in 2021. And just three more victories will see them set another English top-flight record.
They have so far chalked up 31 league wins in the calendar year. Now, for the rest of December 2021, their upcoming league rivals include Wolves, Leeds, Newcastle, Leicester, and Brentford.
Only two victories over these five opponents will see them eclipse Chelsea’s seasonal best of 32 league victories in 2005.
Meanwhile, three more City wins will allow them to overtake Liverpool (33 in 1982) and set another English top-flight record.
Incidentally, City and Liverpool jointly hold the record for the most league wins in a season with 32, for now.
City reached this benchmark in two consecutive years of 2017-18 and 2018-19 campaigns while Liverpool did it a year later.
Further piquing our interest is the fact that the pair also have the longest run of consecutive league wins. Manchester City and Liverpool have each climbed to a record 18 back-to-back Premier League victories.
