Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman, himself in trouble (football news) has commented on Lionel Messi’s departure from the club this summer. The legendary Argentine left the Catalan club after loyally playing for them for 21 years by signing for Paris Saint-Germain. Actually, Messi really wanted to leave last year, when Barcelona unceremoniously threw out his best friend and then-teammate, Luis Suarez. Ronald Koeman has also reflected on Luis Suarez’s move to Atletico Madrid last year. Though Suarez did leave, Messi stayed put, only to move out now, just a year later, after Barca’s financial troubles. And as Diario Sport quotes excerpts from the Dutchman’s interview, Koeman discusses Messi and Suarez’s football transfers away from Barcelona.
Koeman Discusses Messi and Suarez’s Football Transfers
Question: What went through your head when you learned the Messi news?
Answer: It was a big blow. All the planning for the season was done with him in the team. Leo was super motivated as well.
It hurts to lose the best player in the world like that. It wasn’t just Messi, it’s a symbol of the club who left.
Question: Do you ever regret letting Suarez go?
Answer: Regret? No. They [Barca management] appointed me to change things in the team and we thought it would be positive if he [Suarez] left.
We thought he would go to Juventus instead of Atletico, but you should never regret taking the right decision for the good of the club.
