Jarred Gillett will make Premier League history as a referee taking charge of Watford vs. Newcastle on September 25.

Jarred Gillett was born on the Gold Coast. And he was a top referee in Australian soccer for nearly a decade before relocating to England in 2019.

Since making his A-League debut in 2010, he has officiated at five A-League “Grand Finals.” Curiously, he has also won the title of the referee of the year five times across nine seasons.

And, in total in the A-League, he has been in charge of 154 matches.

Besides the English Premier League, he has officiated in the Chinese Super League, Saudi Professional League, and Indian Super League.

Finally, of course, all these international stints are in addition to his work as a referee Australia’s A-League.

Indeed, Gillett was a FIFA-listed international referee for Australia until he left the A-League in 2019, after nine years there.

Back then, he had accepted a post-doctoral research position at Liverpool John Moore’s University and moved to pursue the same.

Before this, he had previously earned a PhD in biomechanics from the University of Queensland at the end of 2018.

Also, a research study he was engaged in, on children with cerebral palsy, he continued after relocating to England.

Premier League hired Jarred Gillett just a few weeks after he arrived in England. They brought him on as a fourth official for a Liverpool legends exhibition match at Anfield.

Three weeks later, EFL also appointed him as a referee. After accepting EFL’s offer, he presided over a League Two match between Morecambe and Cheltenham in April 2019.

As that season was ending, Gillett became the referee for a fixture involving Blackburn against Swansea in the Championship.

More recently, by the end of the 2020-21 season, he had officiated in 64 EFL games.

And now, Jarred Gillett is about to make history in the English Premier League’s legacy.

Gillett will become the first overseas Premier League referee when he oversees this match at Vicarage Road, Premier League confirmed.
