India registered their first win in the SAFF Championship 2021 on Sunday with a marginal 1-0 win over Nepal. After our sister site covered the round-robin stage match in football news, Igor Stimac reacts to India’s first SAFF win.
However, India failed to impress much via this marginal victory, which Sunil Chhetri’s goal in the 82nd minute ensured.
Indian strikers, especially Chhetri himself, missed many other seemingly clear opportunities to score.
In fact, head coach Igor Stimac has also acknowledged that his team must be more clinical in front of goal.
Football News – Igor Stimac Reacts to India’s First SAFF Win
The Croatian was a relieved man after India beat Nepal 1-0 in their third match of the SAFF Championship 2021. Igor Stimac’s Blue Tigers players beat Nepal at the National Football Stadium in Male, on Sunday.
The win put them in the third position in the table with five points from three matches. This means they are still in contention for a spot in the finals.
On the final day of round robin stage, India will play table-leaders Maldives whereas Nepal and Bangladesh fight each other.
However, the Croatian coach was visibly concerned with the way the forwards missed chances throughout the match. Even Sunil Chhetri wasted a couple of them until he scored in the 82nd minute.
“I am very happy with the three points, which is keeping us until the very end with a great possibility of finishing in the finals. I am very happy and grateful for how our boys responded today, in nearly everything,” Igor Stimac stated.
Stimac continued: “I say nearly because scoring is an area where we need to improve. From chances like that we need to score.”
“Otherwise, you have to suffer until the very end. But we need to be patient,” he said.
About Sunil Chhetri, his star striker, Stimac said: “He could have made the difference earlier (laughs). He kept us all nervous till the end. We are all very happy for him and for the record. All the team are working so that he can score more goals.”
