After going over the other teams in this group of Euro 2020, we come to the final Euro 2020 Group E team preview – Slovakia.
Slovakia’s qualification for Euro 2020 was a roller coaster ride. Pavel Hapal’s team beat Hungary twice in derbies, but then lost 0-4 and 1-3 to Croatia and couldn’t beat Wales.
The tournament thus appeared to be a pipe dream until they qualified for the play-offs, after all.
However, after the semi-final, Hapal got the sack and Stefan Tarkovic replaced him.
So, obviously, their qualification wasn’t particularly convincing, but reaching three tournaments in a decade must count for something.
Euro 2020 Group E Team Preview – Slovakia
Slovakia may be in the midst of a rebuild with a new generation of players. Still, they will likely offer a decent fight, especially given their success in the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2016.
They are sure of collecting some points against Poland, Sweden, and Spain, so, the next round is a realistic goal.
Slovakia has historically performed well in games where they are not pushed to score but sit deep and counter-attack quickly.
Their opponents’ game plan suggests they might be able to do so, as they have already defeated Spain in 2014.
All in all, Slovakia is a team that is difficult to anticipate.
That’s because they frequently push themselves to a strong performance and a spectacular victory when no one expects from them. On the other hand, they generally fail to win when they are supposed to.
This could be an attitude issue. But, fortunately in this case, Slovak fans aren’t expecting much from their team, following a poor start in qualifying.
And this could work in Slovakia’s favor. They’ve made it out of the group stage at final events twice.
It all depends on who they face in the next round. The round of 16 is, in our opinion, a fairly achievable aim for Slovakia.
