CSKA Sofia gave Roma a scare with a 0-1 lead early on, but Jose Mourinho’s Roma eventually won 5-1. Among other Europa Conference League football news, Mourinho has won 6/6 games, after winning pre-season and Serie A games too.
And Roma won thanks to a Lorenzo Pellegrini brace and the best strike of the game from Stephan El Shaarawy.
The Giallorossi got off to a shaky start, with three players leaving the loose ball.
This allowed Graham Carey to pounce and blast it into the far top corner from a tight angle.
Busatto denied Eldor Shomurodov’s efforts after Stephan El Shaarawy couldn’t capitalize on an inspired Gonzalo Villar ball over the top.
Then, Lorenzo Pellegrini equalized for Roma with a fantastic individual goal, his first touch controlling a Rick Karsdorp cross on the edge of the box, the second with the inside of his right boot looping into the far top corner.
But it was El Shaarawy who turned the game around with another well-executed strike. This time, it was from the D, drilling into the near bottom corner.
After the restart into the second half, Roma was a little sluggish and risked CSKA Sofia scoring an equalizer. Rui Patricio made himself big against Muhar at the near post.
They took this cue and increased their lead. Riccardo Calafiori ran to the byline and pulled back for Pellegrini’s cushioned finish from seven yards.
Wildschut’s second bookable offence on Carles Perez reduced the Bulgarians to ten men.
Roma added a fourth goal moments later. A corner was not cleared, and Chris Smalling volleyed from close range onto the far post. However, Gianluca Mancini turned in the rebound.
Shomurodov also hit the same upright, and his assist enabled Tammy Abraham to break the offside trap. Once in the clear, Abraham finished over the oncoming goalkeeper.
