Leon Goretzka may not recover from a hip injury to feature in Bayern Munich’s next Bundesliga showdown at Borussia Dortmund. But Bayern Munich want Goretzka in their line-up against Borussia Dortmund, if the Germany midfielder’s hip heals below Saturday.

Record levels of the coronavirus across Germany means Signal Iduna Park will operate at 50% capacity (here’s the football news).

So, while the stadium usually holds 80,000, when Bayern and Dortmund play, it will have a maximum crowd of 15,000 today.

German league leaders Bayern are just a point ahead of second-placed Dortmund going into this match at Signal Iduna Park.

And, to concern them more, Bayern will already miss Joshua Kimmich, under house quarantine after he tested positive for COVID-19.

However, now, Joshua Kimmich’s midfield partner Leon Goretzka is also struggling to be present but his is an injury problem.

If Goretzka drops out, 18-year-old attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala may deputise after his training in the defensive midfield in preparation.

“With Leon, the chances are 60/40, so it won’t be decided until tomorrow. There is a pain issue,” young Bayern head coach Julian Nagelsmann said Friday. “I hope he plays, but the game is too big to let someone play who is not at 100 percent.”

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich’s back-up striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting can leave quarantine Friday if his PCR test for COVID is negative. But Nagelsmann says he is not an option to play in this Bundesliga classic anyway.

Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski will face his former club for the first time after conceding the Ballon d’Or to Lionel Messi on Monday.

“He doesn’t seem frustrated. In my eyes he would have deserved the title, but he’s incredibly professional,” Nagelsmann said, about Lewandowski.

“On one hand, it’s important to let the disappointment sink in and at the same time to draw energy from it.”
