Africa Cup of Nations Football News – Morocco Won 1-0 over Ghana

Among Africa Cup of Nations football news, Morocco won 1-0 over Ghana in their opening Group C match on Monday. Morocco’s Sofiane Boufal seized on a loose ball to score seven minutes from time and scored the singular goal yesterday.

The victory extended Morocco’s winning streak to 10 matches, including all six World Cup qualifiers played between September and November.

However, Morocco won their only Cup of Nations title in 1976 whereas Ghana are four-time African champions already. The last time Ghana won the Africa Cup of Nations title, though, was in 1982.

In the second Group C match, also in Yaounde, Gabon beat the Comoros Islands, making their debut at the tournament.

Now, Morocco will next play Comoros on Friday, after which Ghana will go up against Gabon in the late game.

In this game last night, Boufal hammered home from close range after Zakaria Aboukhlal’s mazy run into the penalty area.

This run saw him tease the Ghana defence, only for Thomas Partey to eventually check him. But then we saw the ball running perfectly and landing perfectly for Boufal to score.

The goal came from a rare chance in a game where both sides showed defensive prowess. However, each team did little to impress in attack.

Morocco and Ghana are each looking to end a long wait for success in the continental championship. But both countries showed little early sign of making an impact at the tournament in Cameroon, admittedly after disrupted preparations.

Boufal’s goal did open up a cagey affair, though, and Morocco had two more decent chances. But captain Romain Saiss headed wide after an 87th minute free-kick. And then, in stoppage time, Ghana’s keeper Joe Wollacott stopped a blistering shot from close range.

Until then, on the other hand, there had only been two opportunities for Ghana.

Joseph Paintsil hit a goal-bound shot towards the top corner in the 70th minute. But, in response, Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou turned the effort around the post.

Ghana also had a good set-piece opportunity in the 31st minute but Partey misfired his free kick over the bar.
