Africa Cup of Nations Football News – Malawi Stunned Zimbabwe

After they lost to the lucky Guinea in prior Group B Africa Cup of Nations football news, Malawi stunned Zimbabwe. Malawi’s Frank Mhango scored twice to assist in a 2-1 victory against their southern African rivals in Group B.

Malawi now have three points and lie third in the group behind Senegal and Guinea, who each have four.

Malawi thus kept their second-round hopes alive in Africa Cup of Nations at the Kouekong Stadium in Bafoussam on Friday.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe have lost both of their matches to date.

Ishmael Wadi put Zimbabwe ahead in the first half, but Mhango levelled just before the break. Mhango then added a second goal to complete his brace after 58 minutes. He took advantage of some hesitant defending and supplied a poacher’s finish.

Zimbabwe were the better side in the opening period especially when they swung high balls into the Malawi box. But they still wasted a number of headed chances before they finally got it right.

Full-back Onismor Bhasera delivered a cross from the left and Wadi connected to the ball from over 10 metres away. His header looped over goalkeeper Ernest Kakhobwe into the net.

But Zimbabwe’s lead lasted only four minutes though as Mhango provided a neat first-time finish for Malawi. He struck the ball toward the back post, with his right foot after Francisco Madinga’s deep cross.

The latter then struck the frame of the goal early in the second period, before Malawi did take the lead.

Then, Madinga missed a forward pass from Mhango, but Zimbabwe defender Teenage Hadebe hesitated. He instead expected goalkeeper Petros Mhari to come and collect the loose ball.

That allowed Mhango, who had kept on running forward, to steal the ball and score from close range.
