Africa Cup of Nations Football News – Guinea Won over Malawi by Luck

Guinea left-back Issiaga Sylla scored a first-half goal to steer his side to a fortunate 1-0 victory over depleted Malawi. Among other Africa Cup of Nations football news, Guinea won over Malawi by luck.

This was an entertaining Africa Cup of Nations Group B clash at the Kouekong Stadium in Bafoussam on Monday, yesterday.

But Malawi had 13 members of their squad unavailable following a COVID-19 outbreak in their camp. This meant that they could only name four players on the bench that included two goalkeepers.

With this 1-0 marginal triumph, meanwhile, Guinea move level with Senegal at the top of the group, AFCON Group B.

Malawi missed numerous chances to claim something from the game and eventually came to rue their profligacy after 35 minutes. That was when Guinea forward Jose Kante teased their defence. He then slid a perfect pass for Sylla to score from close range.

Actually, Malawi had the lion’s share of the chances but they lacked cooler heads in the box. Plus, they also found Guinea goalkeeper Aly Keita in inspired form.

The most wasteful almost-scorer for them was striker Yamikani Chester, who twice found himself in a one-on-one with Keita.

The best of Chester’s chances came after 16 minutes when he intercepted Mohamed Ali Camara’s poor pass in defence.

And he then had a clear run on goal. But he panicked and pulled the trigger too early and without much power, letting the keeper make a comfortable save.

Keita also denied Malawi’s Peter Banda when his curling shot seemed sure to hit the top corner. But Keita clawed it away with a remarkable stop.

Guinea had other chances too, and though it took time, their first real attempt came midway through the first half. But Ibrahima Sory Conte’s header from a corner only managed to crash against the post.

But Sylla’s gamble to run into the box when Kante had the ball out wide proved to be the decisive moment as he was presented with a simple chance to slip his shot past goalkeeper Ernest Kakhobwe from close range to net his third international goal.
