FIFA World Cup 2022 Brazil Squad Information

Brazil is the most successful side in the history of the FIFA World Cup and will enter into the FIFA World Cup 2022 as favourites. However, the nation has failed to win the tournament since 2002. Which by their standards is disappointing. However, even more worryingly, the side were not favourites heading into the competition since 2006. Maybe, apart from the 2014 edition in which they were the hosts. However, we all know how things ended for the side in that tournament.

The below tabulation shows the 26 man list that will represent Brazil in the World Cup. Just like every other team, there were a few eyebrows raised for the players included and omitted.

The most shocking exclusion was Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino. The 31–year-old has had a renaissance at Merseyside this season and has scored nine goals in 21 games for the Reds. Richarlison, Raphinha, Neymar, Rodrygo, Vinicius, Jesus, Antony and Pedro were apparently more appealing options to the coach, Tite.

Another high-profile Premier League player who missed out was Gabriel Magalhães. Juventus’ Bremer was opted ahead of the Arsenal man. In addition to that, Thiago Silva, Militao and Marquinhos are the other central defenders.

Another slightly strange choice was to go for the 39-year-old Dani Alves ahead of Tottenham’s Emerson.

Philippe Coutinho, Renan Lodi, Matheus Cunha and Arthur are other notable but understandable exclusions from the FIFA World Cup 2022 Brazil Squad.

Goalkeeper

Ederson would arguably start for every other team in the World Cup, maybe except Belgium and Germany. However, Alisson’s form is just too good for him to be benched.

Defence

Éder Militão has started at right back on a few occasions in the past but Danilo should be able to hold on to that position. With all that said, Tite would not want to start Dani Alves in knockouts with wingers half his age running at him.

Marquinhos gets into the team without a shadow of a doubt. Thiago Silva, despite his ageing legs, should start over Bremer or Éder Militão.

The left back position is a competitive one. On one hand you have Juventus’ Alex Sandro and on the other on-loan Alex Telles. Despite the horrendous position of his club Telles has been preferred in recent games and I don’t see that changing, although I would like to.

Midfield

Casemiro will be one of the first names on the team sheet. Despite not playing as much as he likes in Manchester. To partner him in the middle of the park, it would be Fred. Certainly, not my preference but it would probably be the managers’ choice.

It is even more surprising when you consider that the manager has Bruno Guimarães in impressive form and the ever reliable Fabinho at his disposal.

Forwards / Attacking midfield

Raphinha will be first choice to start on the right. However, he might be rotated with the likes of Rodrygo, Antony and Gabriel Jesus. On the left, Vinicius has to start as he is arguably the best left winger in the sport right now.

Behind the striker is another certain inclusion. Neymar, the team’s talisman if fit, could play every minute of the tournament for the side. Lucas Paquetá could be used for rotation as well.

Upfront in the absence of Firmino, the striker would be tottanham’s Richarlison. Despite the availability of another North Londoner Gabriel Jesus, the coach would look for a target man like the former Everton man. Pedro could be a surprise package as well.
