FIFA Medical Chief Recommends Waiting till September to Continue Football

The head of the medical committee of the International Football Federation (FIFA), Michel D’Hooghe, believes that football competitions should not resume before September 1st.

“This is the most dramatic situation we have lived since World War II. We must not underestimate it, we must be realistic. It’s not about money, it’s about life and death. The world is not ready for competitive football. I hope it can change very quickly and I sincerely hope so. We need more patience today,” D’Hooghe said in an interview with the Telegraph.

He added, “”Football is only possible if contact is allowed, and avoiding contact is one of the most important things in this epidemic. If one of the players becomes positive, you have to quarantine the whole group. Is this the solution to normal competition? The head of the FIFA Medical Commission believes that the football community must be patient, listen to national authorities and follow basic health rules.”

The German Bundesliga is considering returning to the pitch in early May, while in England they believe the season could continue in June. However, D’Hooghe is not of that opinion. “Just because the balls may be sterilized does not mean that we can play football again. We do not know when the virus will peak in different countries, it will be different in each country. The solution will be when we find a vaccine,” he concluded.
