FedEx St Jude Championship: Rory McIlroy, a two-time FedEx Cup champion, dropped eight strokes back as Si Woo Kim shot an eight-under 62 to nab a tie for the lead with JJ Spaun.
In the first of three playoff events, South Korean Kim acknowledged that he was “thrilled” to hit a “beautiful” shot after holing out from 167 yards on the par-four 18th to conclude a strong final round of six-under.
“I was just trying to, like, (see) 10 feet on the left side and it was (a) perfect shot, (it) came off,” he told reporters.
“Yeah, I was excited,” he added.
His American co-leader, meanwhile, had eight birdies at TPC Southwind in Memphis as he said it was “hot out here”.
“I’m hot, figuratively and literally, I guess. It’s hot out here,” Spaun told reporters.
“I think I put really well and I drove it really well. I guess I hit 15 out of 18 greens, so that’s a pretty good combo. When you’re hitting a lot of greens and putting well and hitting fairways, it’s hard to complain about how I played today.”
Sahith Theegala, a fellow countryman of Spain, was at seven under par, followed by a group of four that included Tony Finau, who was one shot back, and Tyrrell Hatton, of England, who was at five under par.
McIlroy from Northern Ireland and Russell Knox from Scotland both shot even-par 70s to finish eight strokes back.
Scottie Scheffler, the current world No. 1, and Will Zalatoris both battled to shoot 71.
The FedEx Cup Playoffs’ new opening round will be held at St. Jude. Only the top 70 players after this week will progress to the second leg, the BMW Championship. The top 125 players in the regular-season points standings qualified (120 are playing).
