Emma Raducanu will compete against Alize Cornet in US Open first round

US Open: Serena Williams will play Danka Kovinic in the opening round, and Emma Raducanu will begin the defence of her US Open crown against Alize Cornet.

On the women’s Tour, Raducanu and Cornet, the world No. 27 player, have never met. Cornet will break the record for the most consecutive main draw appearances at Grand Slams by a WTA player when she competes in her 63rd straight Slam.

Williams hasn’t met her first-round opponent either, like Raducanu. If Williams defeats Kovinic, who is ranked 80th in the world, the 40-year-old may play world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit in the second round.

In the second round, either Taylor Townsend or Katerina Siniakova will face Raducnau.

Andy Murray of the United Kingdom will play Francisco Cerundolo, the men’s draw’s 24th seed.

The Frenchman Benoit Paire will be Cameron Norrie’s opponent in his first encounter at Flushing Meadows; Paire is drawn in the same section as Rafael Nadal. In the opening round, Nadal will face world No. 198 Rinky Hijikata, a wildcard.

Dan Evans will face Jiri Vesely, and Kyle Edmund’s come back to New York will be difficult because he was paired with Casper Ruud, the fifth seed. While Harriet Dart begins her campaign against Russian 10th seed Daria Kasatkina, Jack Draper takes on Finnish player Emil Ruusuvuori.

Due to his vaccination status, Novak Djokovic will not participate in this year’s competition.

The matchup between former US Open champion Naomi Osaka and American Danielle Collins is the women’s draw’s eye-catching first match.

Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 winner in New York, will compete against Harmony Tan, who defeated Serena Williams in the first round at Wimbledon.

Venus Williams will play 28-year-old Alison Van Uytvanck in her comeback to Flushing Meadows as a wildcard. This will be her 23rd participation at the US Open.

Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Victoria Azarenka all received qualifiers in the opening round.

Iga Swiatek, the current world No. 1, will face Italian Jasmine Paolini before perhaps facing American Sloane Stephens in the second round.

Tatjana Maria, who advanced to this year’s Wimbledon semifinals, will face third seed Maria Sakkari in an intriguing first-round match.

For the first time in 19 years, one of the top four men’s tennis players—Djokovic, Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray—is not seeded first in the men’s draw. Daniil Medvedev is the winner instead, and Rafael Nadal is the third seed.

The current champion, Medvedev, will face Stefan Kozlov in the first round. In the third round, he may run across American Ben Shelton, who just beat Ruud.
