World Darts Championship: Given the hazards posed by the coronavirus pandemic, new PDC Darts World Champion Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright has questioned Michael van Gerwen’s decision to socialise throughout the event.

After testing positive for Covid-19 ahead of his last-32 match, Van Gerwen was forced to withdraw from the event, as was fellow Dutchman Vincent van der Voort.

The three-time champion, who was photographed out for dinner with other Dutch players on social media at the time, expressed his disappointment, confusion, and anger at the time, saying he had done “all in my power” to prevent contracting the sickness.

Wright told Sky Sports’ The Darts Show podcast, “It was down to the players themselves.”

“Michael’s situation is obviously terrible because he is unable to return home. He enjoys going out to eat, but instead of going out, he should have stayed in his hotel room and had his food delivered, which cost him the tournament.”

‘Snakebite,’ who won his second world title by defeating Michael Smith on Monday, did not stay at the PDC-provided hotel and instead hired an apartment.

“With no disrespect to the hotel or the PDC,” Wright said, “you never know whether they close the hotel down fully only for the players.”

“From what I’ve heard, they had the general public in there, and you don’t know what’s going on with the employees – are they being tested and everything like that.” Isn’t London the worst location to be with the virus? It’ll just come in and out the door, isn’t it?

“We didn’t even go to the grocery store or anything.” When we have food deliveries, make sure you wash your hands as soon as you get it, as soon as you open it, as soon as you throw it in the bin, and as soon as you throw it out.

“Every morning when you test yourself, you just think to yourself, ‘Please don’t show up positive,’ so we kept ourselves safe and away from everyone.”

“Perhaps he (Van Gerwen) will take a look at what we did this year to see what we can do better next year.”

‘I turn the boos into cheers,’ says the performer.

At Alexandra Palace, a partisan throng waited for Smith to win his first world title, but the Scotsman said he was prepared for the circumstances.

“I had a feeling that was going to happen,” Wright admitted. “I took care of it.

“After all these years, you learn to just concentrate on your game and tune out the rare moron who says something ridiculous.

“It’s just because they’ve lost a bet or simply wish to sing along with the throng.

“It’s simply a part of the game, and you have to cope with it.
