James Wade has built up a reputation throughout his career as an opportunist. Now after being drafted in to replace Gerwyn Price, he is looking forward to winning it. World Champion Gerwyn Price tested positive for the coronavirus on the eve of the Premier League. Despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his Premier League return, he can be forgiven for his sense of vindication. Wade, currently ranked fifth in the world has reached two major finals in 2020.
“I don’t think anyone is entitled to be in it. I don’t think anyone has a given right to be in it,” said Wade. “The Premier League is about entertainment and the powers above pick who they feel is more entertaining for people viewing.”
Wade was undeterred by the snub and went on to lift the UK title and became only the second player to win a televised title in three different decades after Phil Tayor. Ironically, his victory over Luke Humphries in March’s UK Open showpiece saw him leapfrog Rob Cross into fourth place on the PDC Order of Merit. Had Wade occupied that position in January, he would have been an automatic Premier League selection.
