Czech Masters: At his 249th attempt, Max Kieffer wins the DP World Tour by a single shot

Czech Masters: Max Kieffer of Germany won the D+D Real Czech Masters in a thrilling finale, giving him his first DP World Tour victory at his 249th attempt.

Gavin Green of Malaysia had a three-shot lead going into the final round of the DP World Tour competition, which was shortened to 54 holes on Saturday due to excessive rain that had left much of the Albatross Golf Resort under water. However, his lead vanished in the last stretch.

Green was two ahead with five holes remaining and three under for the day, but he bogeyed the par-four 14th after sending his tee ball into the sea.

After a front-nine 32 and two birdies from the 10th, Kieffer, who started four shots down, shot a six-under 66 to set the clubhouse goal at 16 under. The German then overcame a gaffe on the 15th by taking a shot on the 17th.

The 32-year-old then watched from the driving range as Green’s attempt to force a playoff with a birdie putt from eight feet on the 18th hole lipped out, giving Kieffer his long-awaited first triumph.

“It’s tough right now to say what it means,” Kieffer said. “It’s great, I’m lost for words a little bit. You’re thinking ‘I want to be ready in case he makes birdie’, you expect him to make birdie.

“You don’t want other people to miss putts but when the guy from the TV said you’ve won it the feeling was just ridiculous. I don’t know how I feel – I think I will need a few days!”
