Though the IPL 2021 kicked off on Sunday with an exciting encounter between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings, it was Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli who drew the most attention. Kohli made the unexpected news that he would be stepping down as captain of the franchise after the IPL 2021 season.

On late Sunday, RCB took to social media to broadcast a video of Kohli thanking his fans and all of his supporters. The 32-year-old, however, stated that he will continue with RCB till the end of the IPL season.

“Hello everyone, the entire RCB family, Bangalore’s incredible fans, and everyone who has supported us.” In a video posted on RCB’s official Twitter account, Kohli said, “I have an announcement to make…to inform everyone that this (UAE leg of IPL 2021) will be my last tenure as captain of RCB.”

“This evening, I spoke with management about something that had been on my mind for a while… This will be my final IPL as captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. I’ll be an RCB player till the end of the IPL season. Virat Kohli remarked, “I thank all the RCB fans for believing in me and supporting me.”

Kohli’s decision to step down as RCB captain after the 14th edition of the big tournament comes just days after the batsman declared that he will no longer captain Team India in the shortest format after the next T20 World Cup in order to manage his workload.

“I wanted to be able to commit to the obligations that I am fulfilling, and I felt I needed the space to be fresh, refocus, and be very clear in how I want to move forward,” the RCB captain explained.

“It’s been a wonderful nine-year adventure filled with joy, frustration, happiness, and despair. I just want to express my gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering support and belief in me “Added he.
