The Ashes: Steve Smith confessed that leading Australia to an Ashes victory over England “brought back some old memories,” but that he is happy to give over the reigns to Pat Cummins for the Boxing Day Test.

When Joe Root last led Australia four years ago, Smith oversaw a 4-0 triumph, but he assumed he’d never captain his country again after being suspended in the aftermath of the sandpaper affair in 2018.

He was selected as Cummins’ deputy last month, and after the latter was taken into isolation after a Covid-19 interaction, he found himself back in control for the second Test.

With a 275-run triumph under his belt, things couldn’t have gone any better, but when Cummins rejoins the squad in Melbourne, he’ll revert to his supporting position.

“It’s been a pleasure leading this team in Pat’s absence and continuing what we started at The Gabba last week,” he said. “I didn’t get much notice; I just discovered out the first morning when I had two missed Pat calls and a message from JL” (head coach Justin Langer). ‘Wow, there’s something going on here,’ I thought.

“In a way, it brought back some old memories, and I had a good time out there, but it’s Patty’s squad.” I’m the vice-captain, and I’ll do everything I can to assist him. That is my responsibility. Hopefully, we can maintain our momentum heading into what promises to be a spectacular Boxing Day Test.”

On day five, Jos Buttler raised the potential of an unexpected draw by batting for 207 balls, but when he trod on his stumps early in the last session, it was the end of the line.

“I wasn’t scared yet,” Smith explained, “because we had Broady (Stuart Broad) on the other end and I always thought we could have had Jos out.” “However, it happened in an odd way, with his treading on his stumps.”

“It wasn’t the usual Jos we’ve seen in the past; he’s usually a bit of a dasher, but he played incredibly well.” His defence was excellent, and he sniffed them out for a while.”
