As the T20 World Cup squad announcement deadline approaches, the question of who will represent their respective country at the largest T20 event has become the buzz of the town. Although the teams appear to have come to an agreement, Bangladesh has received unexpected news ahead of their statement. Bangladesh’s seasoned opener Tamim Iqbal has opted to withdraw from the ICC event, according to the latest news.

According to recent rumours, Tamim Iqbal has opted not to compete in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 because it would be inappropriate for him to grab a slot from a kid who has regularly performed for the team. Due to injury concerns, Tamim has been out of T20 cricket for quite some time. In March 2020, he last appeared in the Tigers’ home series against Zimbabwe. In fact, since January 2019, he has only played three T20Is.

“Since I didn’t play in the last 15-16 T20s, it wouldn’t be fair for me to come in and take the place of someone who did well in those games,” Tamim was reported in Bangladesh’s United News as saying.

In Tamim’s absence, who can fill the void?

The Bangladesh Cricket Board will be concerned, if not outraged, by this choice, as they would have preferred a seasoned campaigner at the helm. Tamim is Bangladesh’s second-highest run-scorer in Twenty20 Internationals. He remains the Tigers’ only centurion, having scored 1701 runs in 74 matches. Nonetheless, in his absence, BCB will have to hunt for better choices that are currently available. Mohammad Naim Shaikh, Soumya Sarkar, Mahedi Hasan, and Liton Das are among the players who played for the national team and could be included in Bangladesh’s World Cup roster.

Looking at his qualities at the head of the order, Liton Das remains the leading candidate among these names.

Bangladesh is currently in good form in the shortest format. They made history by defeating Australia in their own backyard. Starting today, they will play a second string’ New Zealand in a five-match series at home.
