The Mumbai Indians appear to be a team on a mission. While they must do the unthinkable to secure a spot in the Playoffs, and whether they do so remains to be seen, the five-time champions are not lacking in determination. After winning the much-anticipated toss, the Rohit Sharma-led side elected to bat first and went out with all guns blazing.

The opening stand was so impressive that Rohit and Ishan Kishan amassed 80 runs inside the powerplay before the Hitman was eventually removed. While Rashid Khan of SunRisers Hyderabad broke the partnership, it took an equally outstanding fielding effort by Mohammad Nabi to hold on to the catch and give the Hyderabad squad something to cheer about.

The Mumbai Indians opener attempted a paddle shot over square leg in the third ball of the sixth over but failed to connect from the middle of the bat. As the ball took the leading edge, it appeared as it would land just out of reach of the square leg fielder within the ring. However, Mohammad Nabi, who was stationed there, covered a lot of ground racing back and easily completed the catch to end the partnership.

Nabi’s attempt can be seen here:

Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan has taken the form he established at the top of the order in his innings against the Rajasthan Royals into this game, smashing a half-century off only 16 balls, the fastest in IPL 2021. As a result, Mumbai scored 83 runs for one wicket in the powerplay and passed the century mark in the eighth over.

Notably, the Mumbai Indians must win by more than 170 runs to qualify for the Playoffs. This is because, while a win would be enough to put them in the same position as the Kolkata Knight Riders, only a big win of that margin or more would allow their net run rate to surpass that of the Eoin Morgan-led side.

SunRisers are missing two crucial players in Kane Williamson and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who have been replaced by Manish Pandey and Mohammad Nabi in the XI. Manish is the Orange Army’s captain in this match.
