Live Cricket News: At the first Test against South Africa in Centurion, India won by 113 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. In 2021, India’s Virat Kohli-led side won its fourth overseas match, and the team will look to build on it with a series triumph in South Africa.
The century innings from opener KL Rahul, who was also chosen vice-captain of the Test squad in the absence of the newly-appointed player in the role, Rohit Sharma, was one of the primary reasons for India’s outstanding performance. In the first innings of the Test, Rahul struck 123 runs to help India reach 324 runs, securing a 130-run advantage that proved crucial to the team’s victory.
Sunil Gavaskar, a former Indian captain, praised Rahul, saying that now that he has rediscovered form, he will be showering “centuries after centuries.”
“He has always been a phenomenal cricketer.” Perhaps he would agree with me that he was an underachiever after making his debut in 2016-17 (2014) and the two or three years in between. But now that he’s regained his mojo and confidence, I expect him to rain centuries after centuries because he’s regained his appetite,” Gavaskar remarked on Star Sports.
Rahul’s performance in the longest format has been erratic since his Test debut in 2014. However, his efforts on the England tour, where he finished as India’s second-highest run-getter, established his place as the first-choice opener in the side (315 runs in four Tests).
This was Rahul’s eighth Test century and sixth in international matches, and Gavaskar believes it will give the opening some much-needed confidence.
“Once you got the taste of what a Test century means.. the pleasure of lifting the bat to the crowd or the changing room.. the entire change room applauding you, these are the moments that every cricketer or batsmen savor. Now that he has got the taste of it, we can expect hundreds from KL Rahul’s bat,” said Gavaskar.
