Latest Cricket News: ‘Vihari and Iyer may have to wait for regular opportunities till seniors arrive’

Latest Cricket News

Latest Cricket News: On Friday, India head coach Rahul Dravid clarified that the team management will give the longest rope to their two senior batters, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, implying that the younger middle-order options, Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer, will have to wait a little longer for their regular opportunities.

Vihari’s brave 40 in the second innings of the Johannesburg Test against South Africa earlier this week helped India set a target of 240 runs, according to Dravid. Since his debut in the 2018 Test series in England, Vihari has struggled to find opportunities. Despite solid results with the bat in the middle order, Vihari has been in and out of the XI, only appearing when regular players have been sidelined, such as in the Wanderers game when he was selected as a replacement for injured Virat Kohli and sick Iyer.

Hanuma Vihari, on the other hand, has consistently delivered, and Dravid was effusive in his admiration for the kid.

“First and foremost, I must commend Vihari on his outstanding performance in both innings. He had a nasty one in the first innings, and unfortunately for him, it popped up, and the fielder only got his fingertips to it and really got a wonderful catch, but he batted beautifully in the second innings, and that gives us confidence “After India’s seven-wicket defeat in the second Test, he remarked.

Dravid also used the opportunity to laud Iyer, who made his Test debut last November and was heralded as the major replacement option for Rahane, who was under pressure.

“Shreyas (Iyer) certainly did that two or three Test matches ago and he has obviously done that, and they just have to take heart from the fact that whenever they get opportunities, they play well and maybe their time will come.”

Dravid, on the other hand, wants the tradition to continue, stating that even today’s veteran batters had to wait for their regular opportunities during his playing days.

“If you look at some of our men who are now senior players and are sort of regarded senior players, they also had to wait their turn and had to score a lot of runs at the start of their careers.”

Dravid, on the other hand, stated that he has a strategy in place for the senior players and that Iyer and Vihari’s time would come.

“We can take a lot of heart from the manner Vihari batted in this game and that should give him a lot of confidence and that should give us a lot of confidence,” he said.
