Latest Cricket News: Shami offers his thoughts on India’s new Test captain, Virat Kohli

Latest Cricket News: After Virat Kohli resigned from the position earlier this month following India’s 2-1 Test series defeat in South Africa, veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has spoken out against India’s new Test captain. Shami is more interested in the outcome, regardless of who holds the post.

According to the Telegraph, Shami is pleased that his first task as a Test captain would be on home territory, with India set to face Sri Lanka in a two-test series later next month, following the limited-overs series against the West Indies. He did add, though, that players as individuals should strive to perform better and take on greater responsibilities, which will aid in achieving the intended outcome.

“Of course, the team needs a leader (in Test cricket). Good that our first series (under the new captain) will be at home (against Sri Lanka next month), so familiarity with the conditions brings in some sort of relief.”

“But if you ask me, I will be focusing more on how I fare and how the bowling unit performs as a whole. I’m really not thinking about who takes over the captaincy. We have Rohit (Sharma), while Ajinkya (Rahane) is there as well, but all that matters is the result.

“It’s up to the individuals to focus more on their own performances and take bigger responsibility, as that leads to the results we expect,” Shami asserted.

Rohit has emerged as the front-runner for the post, having been chosen as the new vice-captain of the Indian squad in December. However, with the seasoned opener suffering from fitness difficulties, the selectors would have to consider the alternative. Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah have all been mentioned alongside him.

Rahane, who was named by Shami before, would have been the first choice ahead of Rohit, but his recent troubles with the bat have forced him to fight for his place in the playing XI, and the BCCI has replaced him as vice-captain as a result.
