Latest Cricket News: Rishabh Pant broke MS Dhoni’s record on Tuesday, becoming the quickest wicket-keeper in the lengthier format of the game to reach 100 dismissals. Pant’s achievement came after he was involved in the dismissal of Temba Bavuma in the ongoing Test against South Africa at Centurion.
Bavuma was dismissed shortly after reaching his half-century as he attempted to drive a Mohammed Shami ball to the off-side but received an outside edge, which fell into Pant’s palms.
Pant took 26 games to achieve the feat, whereas Dhoni took 36 Tests to do it.
Pant was three dismissals short of completing the record before the game began. Apart from Bavuma, Pant was also involved in the dismissal of South Africa captain Dean Elgar, who was dismissed on 1 by Jasprit Bumrah. Wiaan Mulder was caught behind on 12 as well, and Shami dismissed him.
Pant, meanwhile, became the sixth Indian wicketkeeper to reach 100 dismissals in the conventional style of the game. Dhoni, Syed Kirmani, Kiran More, Nayan Mongia, and Wriddhiman Saha are among those on the list, with the former India captain leading the way with 294 dismissals.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day, India suffered a batting collapse, losing seven wickets for 49 runs as the visitors finished their first innings on 327.
South Africa, in reaction, got off to a rough start and are currently batting on 167/7, down by 160 runs.
