Latest Cricket News: After being ruled out of the second and final Test against India due to a persistent left elbow injury, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will be unavailable for a “sustained spell.”

Kane Williamson, 31, started every game for New Zealand during their recent T20 World Cup march to the final, before leading the Black Caps to a drew in the first Test against India in Kanpur.

Tom Latham, the tourists’ opening batsman, will lead the tourists in the second Test.

“Having to cope with such a recurrent injury has been a really trying period for Kane,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said.

“We were able to manage the problem throughout the year and during the T20 World Cup, but the switch to Test cricket and the greater batting burden has worsened his elbow.”

Ajinkya Rahane, who led India in Kanpur in the absence of regular captain Virat Kohli, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, and quick bowler Ishant Sharma, is unavailable.

The trio were all injured in the drew in the first Test, but Kohli was able to return to the team after being rested for the series opener.

After two days of heavy rain, the opening day of the second Test was postponed owing to a soggy outfield. India won the toss and elected to bat.
