Latest Cricket News: According to a former two-time Australia World Cup-winning coach, Australia’s Test series loss to India in early 2021 had a greater impact on the team than anyone expected, but the same result later served as a catalyst in their turnaround, which saw the Aussies win the T20 World Cup for the first time ever.
Ex-head coach John Buchanan has disclosed how a depleted Indian squad upset the mighty and fully-strengthened Australian team on home soil in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in January of 2021 to post back-to-back series triumphs in the country.
“There’s no doubt that the team’s loss to India at home damaged egos and jeopardised the positions of players and support staff,” Buchanan told The Telegraph.
“However, it takes time and some unpleasant lessons to turn a team around. When I spoke with Justin (Langer) after the T20 World Cup, he was almost as excited about the planning and preparation that went into the event as he was about the victory. He also thought they were well-prepared for the Ashes, which are currently on display.”
With a 3-0 lead in the Ashes, Australia has effectively put England on the back foot, and while the Ashes urn will remain in Australia’s possession, Joe Root’s side will have to put in a valiant effort to finish the series on a good note. Buchanan gave his assessment on the English team during the Ashes campaign, calling them awful and pointing out the areas that are causing them the most problems.
“Although a quick look at their records in the longest format over the past two-three years would suggest that they are not a good side, England has been abysmal. (Joe) Root, (Ben) Stokes, (James) Anderson, and (Stuart) Broad are key players for them. They don’t have an opening pair and have a shaky middle order, so they go with (Jos) Buttler and (Jonny) Bairstow instead of (Ben) Foakes, who is the best wicketkeeper “Buchanan continued.
“Furthermore, their bowling offence requires favourable conditions in order to appear dangerous. Some of their choices thus far on this tour seem ridiculous. For example, the decision not to play Anderson and Broad in Brisbane, despite the fact that the conditions were bowler-friendly. And you do it in the first of a series of tests?”
