IPL 2021: Mumbai was given the opportunity to bat first and got off to a fantastic start, but after the dismissal of Rohit Sharma in the middle overs, they lost momentum and concluded the innings at 155/6.

The table in the Indian Premier League has shifted yet again. While it’s understandable to root for the defending champions Mumbai Indians versus Kolkata Knight Riders because of their superior record, the Knight Riders’ performance against Mumbai suggested a significant gap in class.

It was the same squad that struggled in the Indian leg of the IPL 2021 but following two consecutive victories and the way in which they recovered, their prospects of making the playoffs have risen dramatically. Venkatesh Iyer, on the other hand, has emerged as their hero after his quickfire century blew away the Mumbai Indians. In just his second match, he scored 53 runs off just 30 balls, becoming the first player in the IPL to reach the half-century mark. Along with him, Rahul Tripathi backed himself to go for the big shots, scoring an undefeated 74 to help the side finish the match with 29 balls to spare.

Meanwhile, Mumbai has dropped out of the top four after losing two consecutive matches in the UAE. While the outcome should have sent alarm bells in their dugout, their bowlers were messed with on Thursday, which would have been very disappointing for captain Rohit Sharma.

Mumbai was given the opportunity to bat first and got off to a fantastic start, reaching 77/0 in 9 overs. However, with the dismissal of Rohit Sharma, they failed to gain much momentum in the middle overs and ended up at 155/6, despite Kieron Pollard’s 21. Kolkata never gave Mumbai a chance in the run chase, hitting 15 runs in each of the first two overs. Kolkata had already gotten off to a flying start by the time Bumrah sent Shubman Gill back. Later, Rana joined Iyer in a bold display of stroke-making, putting Mumbai’s star-studded bowlers to shame.

Following Mumbai’s setback, Twitter erupted with a barrage of responses. Here’s a roundup of some of them:
