IPL 2021: Although there are various rules and dynamics that regulate the sport of cricket, there are also many “grey areas”—a word that has recently gained popularity. Another incident along these lines has occurred during the Indian Premier League match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Rajasthan Royals.
While the Virat Kohli-led side chose to bowl first, and the RR openers were looking well, a gesture from their RCB wicketkeeper did not sit well with the on-air analysts. Notably, following the last ball of Glenn Maxwell’s third over of the Rajasthan innings, the batter hit the shot straight to the fielder at point, who threw it back to the keeper.
Although Yashasvi Jaiswal did not attempt a run, Bharat virtually waited for the left-handed opener to lift his foot before removing the bails. However, RCB did not file an appeal.
Sunil Gavaskar, a commentator on Star Sports, stated that there was no attempt to take a run and that the gesture from the Bangalore keeper was unnecessary. However, Kevin Pietersen, who was also on the English commentary panel, pointed out that he could be practising his moves, to which former wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta responded that the gesture would not go down well with the Fair Play Award ratings, where Bangalore are currently ranked seventh out of eight teams.

In terms of the game, Rajasthan’s openers have already gotten the team off to a tremendous start as of the time of writing this article. Evin Lewis and Jaiswal combined for 56 runs in the powerplay overs, ensuring that the team did not lose a wicket. Although captain Virat Kohli stated at the toss that he hoped to take advantage of the phase in the first innings when the pitch has something to offer bowlers, the RR openers thwarted all such plans of the opposing skipper.
Both sides have made changes to their respective sides. While Kartik Tyagi has returned for the Men in Pink, George Garton made his IPL debut for Bangalore.
