England won the first One-Day International (ODI) against Sri Lanka by 5 wickets thanks to Joe Root’s (79*) fluent half-century.

Due to the suspension of three cricketers, Sri Lanka selected a relatively inexperienced squad today and was thrashed by a world-class team like England. Though Sri Lankan bowlers made life difficult for England batsmen in the second innings, Joe Root’s magnificent performance helped England over the line convincingly. Earlier, Chris Woakes’ (4/18) excellent session had placed Sri Lanka on the back foot, and no other players made a meaningful contribution save Kusal Perera and Wanindu Hasaranga.

Let’s take a look at some of the statistics from this game

5: Chris Woakes bowled 5 maiden overs today against Sri Lanka.

The number of maiden overs bowled by an England bowler in a 50-over ODI:

James Anderson – 6 vs Pak, 2003
Derek Pringle – 5 vs Pak, 1992
Chris Woakes – 5 vs SL, 2021

Nota bene: ODI matches used to be played with 60 and 55 overs per team, respectively (only 50 over matches have been taken into consideration)

200: With three debutants in the game, Sri Lanka currently has 200 players who have represented the country in one-day internationals (ODIs), with Praveen Jayawickrama earning the 200th ODI cap.
