Cricket News: Since India captain Virat Kohli announced his decision to retire from the shortest version of the game after the T20 World Cup in 2021, various reports have circulated that depict a bleak image of the situation in the Indian men’s cricket team’s dressing room. While Kohli has stated that he will continue to lead the ODI and Test teams, few cricket experts believe that Virat will be forced to relinquish his ODI captaincy as well, particularly if the team fails to win the ICC event in the Middle East.

According to new sources in the Telegraph India, the 32-year-old wants to keep at least one white-ball leadership because standing down completely as the limited-overs national team captain could harm his brand value. Market experts, on the other hand, do not believe this is the case, pointing out that Sachin Tendulkar’s brand value remained unaffected even when he stepped down as captain.

“Even after he retired as a captain, Sachin Tendulkar’s popularity grew. Virat Kohli is in the same boat. If he also relinquishes the ODI captaincy, it will have a minor impact, but nothing major “Navroze D Dhondy, Managing Director of Creatigies Communications, remarked in a CricTracker article.

After the World Cup, the BCCI has yet to officially appoint Virat Kohli’s replacement as captain in T20Is

The BCCI has remained silent on the topic since Kohli’s remark. Both BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah welcomed and applauded Virat Kohli for his remarkable contribution as a leader in the limited-overs format, asserting that the future of Indian cricket is on a definite road. The destiny of the ODI captaincy, on the other hand, remained unknown.

Given his strong performance in recent years and the lack of a similarly impressive option, Kohli appears to be the clear favourite to remain as the Test captain. While Ajinkya Rahane, India’s Test vice-captain, helped India win the series in Australia in 2020-21, he has been out of form in recent innings.

Furthermore, the BCCI has not yet officially announced Rohit as Kohli’s successor at the head. However, he is expected to get the nod ahead of anyone else due to his experience and achievements as a T20 captain. For the time being, the team’s goal is to win the World Cup.
