Cricket News: Former India head coach Ravi Shastri identified two candidates to captain the Indian cricket team in the future on Thursday, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer.
Shastri made the remark when discussing Rahul Dravid, who took over as India’s new head coach following the T20 World Cup campaign earlier this month.
“Rahul Dravid knows his job. All I want to say to him is enjoy. KL Rahul is there, Shreyas Iyer has good leading qualities in the future especially in white-ball cricket,” Shastri told Indian Express.
For the Test series against South Africa, Rahul has been selected as India’s stand-in vice-captain. After Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the three-match series due to a hamstring injury, the news was made. During the tour’s squad announcement, Rohit was selected Virat Kohli’s deputy for the competition. In the meantime, Rahul has led the Punjab Kings of the Indian Premier League in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
Iyer has yet to be introduced to the Indian cricket team’s leadership group. The youngster, who made his Test debut against New Zealand in November at home, was elected captain of IPL franchise Delhi Capitals in 2019 and led the squad to their first playoff spot in seven seasons. He returned to the post in 2020 when the squad made their first IPL final but was injured for the first half of IPL 2021, and although recovering for the UAE leg, he was not given his former role again. The Capitals eventually released Iyer ahead of the 2022 season.
Meanwhile, the Indian squad has had a leadership change as well, with Rohit Sharma taking over the white-ball format. Kohli had stepped down as T20I captain after a disappointing World T20 campaign in the UAE and was ousted from the ODI skipper a month later.
Regarding the decision, Shastri stated, “When Virat Kohli declared he didn’t want to captain the team in T20s, the door was opened for Rohit. He should be the captain of the white-ball team.”
