Cricket News: Usman Khawaja made a dream homecoming to the Australian Test lineup on Day 2 of the ongoing Ashes Test in Sydney, scoring a century to help the hosts build a commanding lead.
Australia placed 416/8 on the board thanks to his efforts before declaring the first innings, after which England reached 13/0 at stumps on Day 2.
Khawaja is playing his first Test match in over two and a half years, and it was the veteran batter’s seventh three-figure score in the longer format of the game. Stuart Broad dismissed him for 137 runs off 260 deliveries.
Khawaja’s century celebration was led from the stands by his wife Rachel, who raised their daughter in joy as the batter reached the three-figure milestone. The video of the celebration earned a lot of love on social media, with fans and ex-cricketers thanking the team for their support.
Rachel told Fox Cricket shortly after the century that the cricketer was initially nervous but had changed his mind following the final net session the day before.
“He was definitely nervous going into the game, far more than I expected.” But I believe he felt a little better after that final net session the day before.”
“He astonished me last night with how calm he was. He enjoyed a restful night’s sleep and appeared relaxed when he awoke this morning. “He’s a really chill guy,” Rachel added, “but I thought he was a lot calmer than I expected.”
Rachel stated of Khawaja’s inclusion in the starting XI, “I guess we both just felt it was unexpected.” He hasn’t played for the team in two years.”
“Our lives have completely changed,” she continued. We have two children, one of whom is on the way. It’s been more about the family lately. And he’s only recently started playing cricket for Queensland, which he enjoys.
Rachel also expressed her want for the batsman to play in one more Test match for Australia so that their daughter may see him bat.
“It means a lot to me. Rachel explained, “I simply wanted him to play one more Test at home so she could be there.”
“All I wanted to do was cross that off the list.” Then to have it turn out this way is fantastic. Not just for us, but also for Ozzie’s parents, who are sitting at home with his brother and nephew because they were unable to attend today.”
“They’re all going to be ecstatic and proud of him.” It’s very remarkable. I’m looking forward to seeing him tonight. “It’s incredible,” she added.
