Cricket News: India may have lost the second Test to South Africa at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, leaving the series tied at 1-1 going into the third and final match, but they are likely to stay positive thanks to a few outstanding performances. Without a question, Shardul Thakur was one of them, with the best bowling numbers for an Indian player against the Proteas in Tests. Aakash Chopra, like many others, had misgivings about the Palgharh-born cricketer, and he was glad to be proven incorrect.

Thakur took 7/61 in the Proteas’ first innings to help India restrict the hosts to a 27-run lead. He came in for a 28-run cameo in the second innings to help the visitors reach their 240-run goal.

Chopra, a former India opener, said that he had questioned Thakur’s status in the team, but he was satisfied with the truth.

“In the second Test match, Shardul Thakur has been the pick of the Indian bowlers, rather than the Indian players.” “I was one of those individuals that asked questions,” Chopra explained.

Chopra, a former cricketer turned commentator, revealed why he was sceptical about Thakur.

“If he isn’t scoring runs and isn’t picking up wickets in any event, he isn’t getting the bowling because he is the fourth bowler. In fact, he only bowled one ball in the first 35 overs, despite taking seven wickets.”

“So, if you are not introduced in 35 overs and are unable to score runs, as was the case in the first two or three innings, your place in the team is in jeopardy,” Chopra explained.

He came to this conclusion:

“But then, he just turned this Test match on its head by that inspiring spell. He took seven wickets, which is a huge achievement. After that, he scored crucial 28 runs with the bat because of which India got a lead of 239. So in my opinion, Lord Thakur is absolutely phenomenal.”
