Cricket News: Although the BCCI senior selection committee was expected to identify the squad for the tour of South Africa on Tuesday, this did not happen. The selection committee has now been forced to postpone the unveiling of the team due to injuries to numerous players.

According to the Indian Express, at least four players – Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shubman Gill, and Ishant Sharma – are doubtful for the South Africa series because they require a month to fully recover. Both Ravindra Jadeja, the Men in Blue’s favourite left-arm spinning all-rounder, and his backup Axar Patel have been injured, so it will be interesting to see how the selectors deal with this dilemma.

According to the same study, Jadeja has a ligament tear, while Patel has a stress fracture. With these events, India’s captain Virat Kohli would be forced to field Ravichandran Ashwin as their speciality spinner – a superb bowler with a track record of winning matches, but who was not granted a single Test match during India’s Test series against England earlier this year.

If Jadeja has surgery, he will only be able to play in the IPL in 2022

The storey quotes a source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as saying that Jadeja’s injury could take months to cure and that if he has surgery, he will only be able to play in the Indian Premier League next year.

In the absence of both Jaddu and Patel, the selectors will have to choose between Shahbaz Nadeem and Saurabh Kumar if they want a left-arm spinner in the squad. While Shahbaz has already represented India, Saurabh is now representing India A in South Africa.

Meanwhile, the selectors must pick who will captain the One-Day Internationals and vice-captain the Test matches. While Virat had just resigned from his T20I captaincy, the selectors must now determine whether or not to go with two white-ball captains going forward. Furthermore, Ajinkya Rahane, the country’s Test vice-captain, has been in poor form and was on the verge of being dropped in the final Test before an injury forced him out.

In this scenario, Rohit Sharma might be named vice-captain in Test matches and skipper in ODIs, but these selections will not be made until after the selection meeting.
