The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering replacing Virat Kohli as India’s One Day International captain with Rohit Sharma. While Virat has already stepped down as India’s T20I captain, the Chetan Sharma-led selection panel will meet to discuss what to do with Kohli’s ODI captaincy ahead of India’s visit to South Africa.

If Rohit is named the ODI captain, the team will be able to have a separate white and red-ball captain in the future, but if Virat continues to captain the 50-overs side, it will be a different challenge not only for the other support staff who work closely with the captain but also for the same set of players who will be considered for both T20Is and ODIs.

Chetan Sharma, Sunil Joshi, and Abey Kuruvilla were present at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to watch India’s second Test match against New Zealand, and are expected to meet with board President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah to discuss a number of issues, including Kohli’s leadership in the 50-over format.

Because the ODI series isn’t crucial this year, the decision can be postponed: Official of the BCCI

“As of now, it appears that Virat will be unable to retain his ODI captaincy,” a top BCCI official told The Indian Express. “However, since ODI isn’t vital this year with only a few matches here and there, one can consider delaying the decision.”

“However, the counter-argument is why do you want separate ideas for two formats when the majority of people in charge of making decisions believe Rohit is the man moving ahead and will have time to prepare a squad for the 2023 tournament,” he continued.

Meanwhile, the insider discussed Ajinkya Rahane’s recent form and predicted that he will be dropped from the playing XI for the second Test match. It was communicated that once Rahane is no longer a permanent member of the Test team, he will be unable to serve as the deputy, and if he is removed, Rohit will most likely be designated the team’s vice-captain once more.

India’s trip to South Africa, which begins later this month, will include three Tests and as many One-Day Internationals.
