Cricket News: Surrey defeats Yorkshire to claim the county title

Cricket News: On Thursday at the Oval, Surrey defeated Yorkshire by ten wickets in three days to win the County Championship for the second time in five years. After scoring 179 in response to Surrey’s first-innings 333, Yorkshire was eventually bowled for 208 in the four-day match, with Australian paceman Daniel Worrall taking 4-61. Given that Hampshire, who was currently in second place, had already fallen to Kent at Southampton, Surrey just needed 55 runs to win.

With just one round left to play, Surrey captain Rory Burns, who England had passed over as an opening batsman, hit the winning boundary to give Surrey a 22-point victory and put them an untouchable 27 points ahead of neighbours Hampshire. Surrey has won eight of their 13 games so far this season, keeping them the only county in either of the Championship’s two divisions without a loss.

Hampshire has a nine-game winning streak in the Championship compared to Surrey’s eight, but a third loss was all but assured when Kent dismissed them for just 57 runs, handing them a 108-run deficit after the first innings.

In honour of their 90-year-old former captain and manager, the leader of their 1971 Championship-winning team, their south London headquarters was christened the Micky Stewart Oval when they won their 21st championship.

Hampshire remained in the hunt to reach a target of 378 thanks to fifty-point performances from Joe Weatherley, captain James Vince, and James Fuller. But when they were dismissed for 300, with imposing seamer Nathan Gilchrist collecting 4-60, aspirations of adding to their 1961 and 1973 titles were crushed.
