Costa Rican Government Declares Return of Professional Sports from May 15

The first division of Costa Rica will become the first soccer league in the Americas to play again after the break in play caused by the coronavirus pandemic, ESPN reports.

After the Costa Rican government declared Monday that professional sports can start from May 15, president of the Costa Rican federation (UNAFUT) Julian Solano also announced that play would restart behind closed doors on Wednesday May 20.

“Football returns to our fields following a lengthy delay beginning on May 20 and continuing Monday, Wednesday and Saturday before the season is finished.” Solano said in a video press conference.

The league will be allowing five substitutions per game, he confirmed. He also added, “If there’s a big final it’s going to be July 1.”

The Nicaraguan league in the Americas never stopped playing despite the widespread of the coronavirus globally. With the exception of this league, Costa Rica’s first division is the first to resume play post-pandemic.
