Citi Open: Camila Osorio loses to Emma Raducanu, who advances to the quarterfinals in Washington

Citi Open: In a match that took place in the searing heat of Washington, Camila Osorio of Colombia was defeated by Romania’s Emma Raducanu, who thereby advanced to the Citi Open quarterfinals.

The British No. 1 was seeking to gain some momentum after defeating Louisa Chirico in a two-and-a-half-hour match to earn her first victory of the North American hard-court season.

The second seed in the competition and defending US Open champion Raducanu got off to a strong start, going up 3-0 after an early break and hold.

Osorio, the world’s 67th-ranked player, returned with two breaks of her own to lead 5-4 after falling behind 4-2.

However, Raducanu came back to save two set points in the tenth game, bringing the first set to a tie-break.

Raducanu’s serve continued to struggle as Osorio had a 5-3 advantage after he had used a mini-break to go up 2-0.

The British world No. 10 eventually levelled things out and forced a set point, which she won with a second break.

In the second set, Raducanu appeared to be in control after jumping out to a 4-2 lead, but Osorio once more came back to even the score at 4-4 before both players lost their serves.

When the set entered its second tie-break, Raducanu required a medical time-out to heal the blisters on her racquet hand that proved so costly at the Australian Open. She then returned to hold.

The 19-year-old fought back and won 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 after dominating from the baseline and moving ahead 5-3. Osorio’s missed serve return gave the teenager her first match point (7-4).

“I think I died about three times in that match and I came back – honestly, I don’t know how,” Raducanu said in her post-match comments on court.

“Camila is such a battler. I was working so hard for every single point.

“When she comes back, the dynamic of the match changes a bit, so I am just really pleased to have got through that one.”

During the match, both players had taken medical breaks at various points, Osorio for a blister on her big toe in the middle of the second set.

Of her own hand issues, Raducanu said: “At the beginning of the match I was alright, but then throughout the match, my skin was just ripping off – it was pretty raw and open.”

To advance to the last four, Raducanu must defeat Liudmila Samsonova of Russia.

“She is a huge ball striker and has the ability to take the game out of your hands, so for me, it is just about recuperating as best as I can for tomorrow,” the British No. 1 said.

“Both of us are going to be feeling it, and it is a matter of who is going to stay tough.”
