Buddy McGirt, the new trainer, on Callum Smith: “He can punch, but he’s more than just a punching bag. He has to develop confidence in his other abilities. I don’t see anyone stopping him from becoming a champion if he has a few battles to feel comfortable at light-heavy.”
As the pair explore how to reclaim a world title, new trainer Buddy McGirt says Callum Smith has “more to him than puncher power.”
After Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez terminated Smith’s super-middleweight championship reign and unbeaten record, he might reinvent himself in the light-heavyweight division.
This week, he announced a new relationship with McGirt, and his new cornerback told Sky Sports: “From the first time I saw him, I knew he could fight.
“He can punch, but he’s more than just a punching bag. He has to develop confidence in his other abilities.
“I’m confident he’ll be a champion once more.”
American McGirt explains how the collaboration came to be: “Paul, Callum’s brother, called to see whether I’d be interested in taking on his brother. I travelled to Liverpool, where we worked for a few days before arriving here.”
Artur Beterbiev (IBF and WBC champion) and Dmitry Bivol (WBA) are undefeated in the light-heavyweight class, which Smith is considering entering, while Joe Smith Jr has the WBO title.
“It’s a really difficult division, a very hot division,” McGirt added.
“I don’t see anyone stopping him from becoming a champion if he gets a couple of fights to get comfortable at the weight.”
Canelo Alvarez, Smith’s conqueror, is the WBA, WBC, and WBO super-middleweight champion and will meet IBF titleholder Caleb Plant to determine an undisputed champion.
Should Smith be given another chance at the Mexican great, McGirt already has a strategy in place.
“I’d teach him how to make the most of his height and reach,” he stated. “You can’t allow Canelo to settle into a routine. You need to take him out of his comfort zone. You may forget about it once Canelo is at ease.”
