Joe Cordina beat Faroukh Kourbanov by majority decision at the SSE Arena to maintain his unbeaten record. One of the judges ruled the bout a draw, while the other two judges marked the fight as 98-93 and 96-95 in favour of Cordina. He was at his best for the start of the fight but was faded away towards the end and was forced to settle for a points victory in his first fight since 2019.
“Could have been better but at the same time, I got a good 10 rounds with a difficult opponent,” Cordina said. “He was quite tricky, quite cute. I’m just glad to be back and get a few rounds under my belt before I move on.”
Kourbanov started to slowly compete and they stood toe to toe in the fifth round. Cordina then seized his opportunity and had his best round in the sixth. He could not follow up on his momentum in the seventh and seemed content to stand his ground for the rest of the fight.
“I know I can hurt people when I need to,” Cordina added. “This fight was about getting rounds under my belt. I could have pushed a little bit more and let my hands go a bit more but I felt comfortable, I didn’t get out of second gear.”
