Boxing News: According to Top Rank head Todd DuBoef, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua will still fight in the heavyweight division’s most-anticipated bout “because the people want it.”
WBC champion Fury is planning a defence against Dillian Whyte, while Joshua is planning a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk in 2022 to reclaim the IBF, WBA, and WBO titles.
Negotiations for the British rivals to fight for the undisputed world title fell through this year, but Fury’s US promotional organisation believes there is still a lot of interest in the bout.
“I’d love to see Fury take on Joshua, Usyk, and Whyte,” said DuBoef of Top Rank.
“It all boils down to what the public wants to see.”
“Regardless of the sequence, the people want to see Fury vs Joshua.”
“It doesn’t matter if one of them gets out-boxed one night since they all have great fan bases and personalities.”
“As participants, we owe it to the public to serve what they desire.
“Because the people want it, I believe Fury and Joshua will fight at least once.
“If Joshua and Usyk fight again and Usyk looks as good as he did before, the people may say, “We want Fury vs Usyk.”
“Joshua claims to have had a bad night. As he did against Andy Ruiz Jr., he needs to establish his authority.
“Joshua must restore his career to its former glory by deleting his off-night. That is critical.
“He is a fantastic ambassador for the sport as well as a fantastic champion. Boxing will be more successful if he and Fury are successful.
“Uncertainty’s dynamic character piques our interest.
“Tyson is in a fantastic position right now. He was brought in as a replacement for Deontay Wilder, who was injured.
“His personality has conquered the globe.”
What fights do you want to see in 2022?
“There are several fascinating fights between 130 and 140 pounds,” DuBoef remarked.
“Jose Ramirez vs. Jose Pedraza is a terrific matchup coming up.
“Teofimo Lopez will increase his weight from 135 to 140 pounds. Then, on February 26, ‘the king’ Josh Taylor takes against Jack Catterall in Scotland.
“What occurs with Vasiliy Lomachenko and the lightweights fascinates me.
“Would Lomachenko be able to take on Shakur Stevenson?” That would be a fantastic battle.
“George Kambosos Jr. vs. Loma?”
“Shakur vs. Emanuel Navarrete or Oscar Valdez?”
“A rematch between ‘Monster’ Naoya Inoue and Nonito Donaire would be fantastic.”
“These are high-level battles using amazing abilities.”
