Boxing News: As he prepares to begin his championship defence, Richard Torrez says he wants to be known as a world heavyweight champion “forever”.

After returning from this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo with a silver medal, the 22-year-old American has inked a promotional deal with Top Rank.

Torrez, who will make his professional debut in February, has pledged to establish himself as a formidable champion.

The Californian told Sky Sports, “I’m a tiny heavyweight, but I’m quite active.” “I’ve got a fantastic engine on me, and what I lack in size I make up for in power.”

“It is said that you die twice. I want to live twice: once physically and once when the last person whispers your name.

“I believe so,” Torrez answered when asked if he can win a global title. I believe I’ve laid a solid basis. I have the proper people on my side, as well as the appropriate mindset.

“I am confident that I shall be one day.”

Although they may cross paths in the pro ranks, Britain’s bronze medalist Frazer Clarke did not share the ring with Torrez in Japan.

Prior to the Olympics, Torrez expressed his admiration for Clarke to Sky Sports.

“He’s a terrific guy,” he remarked. “I’ve gone to a lot of camps with him and we’ve had a lot of very nice sparring sessions.”

“As a guy, he’s as terrific as he is a boxer.” He’s a huge guy with amazing skills.

“If we meet up, he’ll be a tough competitor.”

“I do research on him and examine videotape of him; when we spar, I replay the video.

Torrez won a dramatic stoppage victory over Kamshybek Kunkabayev in the Olympic semi-finals, but lost on points in the final to Bakhodir Jalolov.

He now plans to make a significant impression at heavyweight as America waits for another champion to be crowned after Tyson Fury ended Deontay Wilder’s tenure as WBC champion.

“We’re aiming to [start] in February,” Torrez added.

“We’re tearing down barriers and entering new spaces. It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a small child.

“This day happening is something I’ve envisaged, but for it to actually materialise and come to completion is wonderful. I simply cannot wait, and I hope you cannot either.”
