Boxing News: Last month, the online tabloid TMZ published a video of Mike Tyson punching the seat behind him on a plane; prosecutors announced on Tuesday that the former world heavyweight boxing champion will not face prosecution.
Prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday that Mike Tyson will not face criminal charges after being seen on film hitting a fellow passenger on a plane at San Francisco International Airport last month.
The case has been closed, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office. According to District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe, both the victim and Tyson requested that no charges be made.
Tyson is seen repeatedly pounding the unidentified man in the head, gushing blood, on film. The video was first released by TMZ, which said it was shot on a Jet Blue flight going for Florida.
The same man can also be seen standing up behind Tyson’s seat, seemingly attempting to catch the 55-year-old’s attention, while the ex-fighter sits quietly but periodically turns around.
Representatives for Tyson previously said the boxer was on a flight with “an aggressive passenger who began harassing him and threw a water bottle at him while he was in his seat.”
In a statement released Tuesday, Tyson’s attorneys commended the district attorney’s decision, thanking law enforcement for their “careful, diligent, and professional work.”
